The stone industry is based on the use of loose stone (aka boulders), which are the residual products of mining, as the raw material for all of its products. Although we're now almost a month past the launch, we're still in the midst of exciting times for Dwarf Fortress. 3 Tips Introduction to the Stone Industry edit A considerable industry centered on the use of stone is essential for any fortress. An excellent exercise for learning about the uses, features, and dangers of freezing temperatures. Released Dwarf Fortress 50.05 A Bay 12 Report to start the new year Future of the Fortress is a little longer this time, and it's always complicated when it intersects the holidays, so that'll be up later. Using magma to melt ice in freezing terrain, pump the water where you want it to make a wall, and then pumping away the magma to let the water freeze into ice. Dwarfs have a tendency to stand in exactly the wrong spot when the detracted layer drops, so make sure you have a "functioning" hospital before pulling the lever. As an engineering task this is quite the challenge if you've never done it before, but has the benefit of being a nice practice project for punching through aquifers. To achieve a perfect collapse you can keep the layer connected to solid ground above via a Support – connect a lever on that support, and when a dwarf pulls it the support will vanish, dropping the chunk. A layer of natural material that is completely separated from the surrounding material (beside, above, and below) that collapses all at once will simply fill the space below instead of pulverising into rubble. Also note that unless the area is impeccably sealed off, dwarfs have a tendency to go for a swim in the lava for Fun™.ĭrop a suspended layer of earth/stone into the spot you want filled. The obsidian will count as "natural" since it was formed, not constructed, but if you're looking for earth or stone this wont help. For completeness though, you can:įill the area with obsidian. Since there's no way to place natural stone and earth, once you've dug an area out, you can only refill space you dug out by ordering constructions like walls and fortifications to be built.Īctually, there are two alternatives to constructions that are especially dwarfly and are much more Fun™, but require enough additional work that you are probably not looking for this sort of thing. Stone blocks are sometimes used as materials during strange moods.īlocks of flux cannot be used for making pig iron or steel, nor can blocks of ore be smelted into metal. You can only fill space with constructions. A pillar made out of normal stone is called a rough pillar.īlocks, unlike raw stone or wood, can stack in bins in bar/block stockpiles.īlocks have a base value of 5, compared to the raw material value of 3 for stone, wood or glass metal bars already have a base value of 5. Blocks can also be used in place of raw stone or wood in roads, bridges, and other major constructions (but not in items like crafts or furniture), but the difference is purely in the value. Glass can be formed as blocks at a glass furnace, and metal blocks can be made at a forge from a single metal bar (or, in the case of adamantine, from four wafers).Ī single block is required in order to build a well, screw pump, or ashery. Stone and wood can be shaped into blocks at a mason's workshop or carpenter's workshop. For "blocking" in combat, see Armor.Ī block is a sub-type of building material. ☼MASTERWORK☼ For area blocks of 48x48 tiles on a game map, see Region.
